How Unfair Are Donald Trump’s Tariffs, What Is India’s Advantage, and What Should It Do?

Introduction

When Donald Trump was the President of the USA, he put a lot of taxes (called tariffs) on goods from other countries. He said it was to protect American businesses. But many people think these tariffs were not fair, especially for countries like India.

Are Trump’s Tariffs Unfair?

Yes, in many ways they were unfair. Trump put high taxes on things like steel and aluminum from India and other countries. He also removed India from a trade program called GSP which earlier gave us benefits.

He didn’t do the same to all countries equally. It hurt small and developing countries more. Also, these actions were not supported by WTO rules.

What Is India’s Advantage?

Even though these tariffs were tough, India has some strong points:

  • India has many young people who can work hard.
  • We are already doing great in IT and digital services.
  • Many companies now want to move out of China and come to India (this is called the China+1 strategy).
  • India makes cheap and good medicines for the whole world.
  • Our digital systems like UPI and Aadhaar are very modern and helpful.

What Should India Do?

India should take some smart steps now:

a. Talk With Other Countries

  • We should talk with America and ask to bring back GSP.
  • We should work with other countries in WTO to stop unfair trade.
  • Make new trade deals with countries like the UK and Europe.
b. Improve Our Economy
  • Help factories grow with government schemes like PLI.
  • Make it easy for people to start and run businesses.
  • Give more support to small businesses so they can also export.
c. Use Politics and Digital Power

Show the world how our digital tools can help everyone.

Be a leader of developing countries in trade talks.

Work more closely with groups like Quad and Indo-Pacific.

Conclusion

Trump’s tariffs may have caused problems, but India can turn this into an opportunity. We should use our strengths and become a strong country in global trade. If we act smart now, the future can be bright for India.
